Dr. Fleming was born and raised in Meridian, Mississippi. He graduated from University of Mississippi in 1969 with a BA degree He went on to University of Mississippi, graduating in 1976, and completed a Family Practice Residency Program at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Camp Pendleton, California. He has been a practicing physician for 28 years.
Dr. Fleming served in the United States Navy from 1976 to 1982, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He served as Medical Director for the Drug and Alcohol Program in Guam and was Chairman of the Family Advocacy Committee for the Naval Regional Medical Center. He went on to become a member of the teaching staff for the Family Practice Department.
In August of 1982, Dr. Fleming began his practice in Minden, Louisiana after learning that the area had a need for family doctors. From 1982 through the present he has been a Clinical Instructor for LSU Medical Center in Shreveport and served as Chairman for the Quality Assurance Committee at Minden Medical Center. He also was President of the Medical Staff at the Minden Medical Center from 1999 – 2001. In 1996, Dr. Fleming was elected as Coroner of Webster Parish where he served until the year 2000. He has served on the Minden Medical Center board of directors as well as serving on the board and PTA President for Glenbrook School in Minden. Other past services include President of the Webster Parish Chapter of the American Heart Association. Currently he serves as President of the Webster Parish Medical Society and Chairman of the Automation and Information Flow Committee.
Dr. Fleming is a leader in the area of electronic medical records, where his clinic was the first to go fully paperless in 1999. He continues to promote the benefits of computerization for good accurate medical record keeping. He has been involved in a variety of community activities where he has served as deacon of his church and is currently serving as director for an adult Sunday school department at First Baptist Church.
Dr. Fleming has received many recommendations throughout the years of being a physician. He received Navy commendation in 1981 and authored his first book Preventing Addiction: What Parents Must Know To Immunize Their Kids Against Drug and Alcohol Addiction in 2006.
He and his wife Cindy, who is a registered nurse, have been happily married for 29 years. They have four children, Brittany, Brooklyn, John, Jr. and Barrett.
