Brian Lane Elkins, MD was honored as the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians’ (LAFP) 2008 Family Physician of the year on Saturday, July 5, 2008, in Destin, Florida, at the 2008 Awards and Installation Ceremony. Dr. Elkins has been an LAFP member since 1999. By being selected by the state chapter for this honor, he will automatically be eligible for the American Academy of Family Physicians Family Physician of the Year Award.
Dr. Elkins is a 1992 Magna Cum Laude graduate of LSU. His medical education was at LSUHSC-Shreveport 1992-1996. He was awarded membership in Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Elkins was an outstanding resident and served as chief resident at In His Image Family Practice Residency in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He became a member of the LSUHSC-Shreveport Family Medicine Residency in Alexandria in 1999.
As the physician for the Rapides Children’s Advocacy Center, he has examined approximately 100 children for child abuse. At LSU-Shreveport Family Medicine Residency Program in Alexandria he became Associate Program Director in 2002 and Program Director in 2005. He is active in the medical staff of Rapides Regional Medical Center. He is presently a member of the Medical Executive Committee and chairs the Performance Improvement Committee and Medical Records Committee.
Dr. Elkins has an active private life. He is a deacon in his church, is a tenor in the Red River Chorale, and is an avid runner. He and his lovely wife Barbara are raising 4 children. The most recent addition, Faith, was adopted from an orphanage in China.
