Louisiana was chosen as one of the top four applicants to implement the CMS Electronic Health Records Demonstration.  This demonstration provides an opportunity for small to medium practices to receive support to adopt and implement an electronic health record (EHR). The demonstration also includes reporting on a set of quality indicators in order to assess the impact of EHR use. CMS will provide financial payments to selected practices, and the Louisiana Health Care Quality Forum and our many stakeholder partners are committed to providing technical assistance and other support needed to help practices achieve a smooth transition to EHR use and quality reporting. Mexican Americans and blacks experience disparities in health outcomes relative to white populations. During the past five to 10 years, fewer blacks and Mexican Americans are going to medical school and entering primary care professions. To assure the availability of a patient-centered medical home for all Americans, policy makers must work to support a culturally competent and diverse primary care workforce. Read more...

John Fleming is ahead in the crowded GOP field in Louisiana’s 4th district, according to a just-released poll for his campaign. Fleming, who is a doctor and a businessman, received 43 percent in the survey, conducted July 25-27 by Southern Media & Opinion Research. Businessman Chris Gorman, who works for his family’s trucking company, was second with 17 percent, and former Bossier Chamber of Commerce President Jeff Thompson was third with 15 percent. Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States.  Annually, tobacco cost Louisiana $1.47 billion in direct medical cost and 6,400 people die yearly from smoking related diseases.  The Department of Health and Hospitals’ Tobacco Control Program(TCP) is committed to using evidence-based strategies for tobacco prevention, control, and awareness in order to empower citizens to make healthy lifestyle choices to create a Tobacco-Free Louisiana.
