Louisiana has a shortage of primary care physicians.  Approximately 25% of the state’s population lives in rural areas.  However, less than 14% of the state’s physicians practice in rural areas.  North Louisiana Area Health Education Center (NLAHEC) in collaboration with local communities and physicians, sponsor an important summer training program to introduce first year medical students to the clinical realities of practicing medicine in a primary care setting. Read more...

Emilee Leger, Louisiana’s Tar Wars Poster Contest winner, received Honorable Mention at the 2008 Tar Wars National Conference in Washington, D.C. during a ceremony held on Monday, July 21st.  Emilee is a fifth grade student from Ernest Gallet Elementary School in Youngsville, Louisiana.  Mrs. Leger said, “The Tar Wars Conference was great. Emilee had a wonderful time, as did all of us.  Thank you again for the opportunity to attend the conference.  It was a once in a lifetime trip for her and one she will never forget”.  Emilee also had a chance to meet with Senator Vitter and was given a capitol tour by a staff member in Senator Landreau's office. Brian Elkins, MD Named 2008 LAFP Family Physician of the Year

Brian Lane Elkins, MD was honored as the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians’ (LAFP) 2008 Family Physician of the year on Saturday, July 5, 2008, in Destin, Florida, at the 2008 Awards and Installation Ceremony. Dr. Elkins has been an LAFP member since 1999. By being selected by the state chapter for this honor, he will now be eligible for the American Academy of Family Physicians Family Physician of the Year Award. Read more...
