AAFP Thomas W. Johnson Award for Career Contributions to Family Medicine Education Nominations Due Feb. 6

LAFP wants your suggestions for a Louisiana nominee for the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Thomas W. Johnson Award for Career Contribution to Family Medicine Education. Nominations are due Friday, Feb. 6.

Established in 1973, AAFP’s Thomas W. Johnson Award is designed to “recognize persons who in the opinion of the AAFP board of directors have made outstanding contribution to education for family medicine in undergraduate, graduate and continuing education spheres.” The award was named in honor of Dr. Tom Johnson, a long-time member of AAFP who actively served the Tennessee state chapter and national AAFP before joining the Education Division staff in 1969. From 1971-73, Dr. Johnson served as director of the Division of Education.

Criteria and Nomination Requirements:

  • Nominee must be an AAFP member.
  • Nominee is recognized for their lifetime contribution to medical education.
  • Nominee has developed and implemented innovative curriculum, teaching model(s) or programs and engaged in local, state and national or international educational initiatives.
  • Nominee is recognized for their participation and leadership in academic medical organizations.
  • Nominee must have a national reputation.
  • Nominee may not be a current AAFP staff member, though former AAFP staff members are eligible.

The award presentation will take place in October at the 2009 Congress of Delegates and AAFP Scientific Assembly in Chicago.

If you would like to nominate a member of the Louisiana family medicine education community, please send that person’s name to Mary Catherine Koonce.

In order for LAFP to forward nominations to AAFP on time, nominations must be received by LAFP no later than Friday, Feb. 6.
