Introducing the Louisiana Physicians Council on Cancer
The Louisiana Physicians’ Council on Cancer held its inaugural meeting on September 27, 2007, in Baton Rouge. The Council is a joint effort of the American Cancer Society and the Louisiana Comprehensive Cancer Control Program, under the umbrella of the Louisiana Cancer Control Partnership.
The members of the Physicians’ Council on Cancer represent both primary care and tertiary care physicians throughout the state. The Council is charged to work on both prevention and early detection of cancer as well as improving quality of life for cancer patients. During the inaugural meeting, Dr. Charles L. Brown Jr. challenged all attending physicians and physicians throughout the state to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality by adopting the American Cancer Screening Guidelines.
The initial project of the council representatives and the regional cancer control officers is an academic detailing project, scheduled to begin in January 2008. The regional cancer control officers and the council representatives are working together to identify primary care physicians throughout the state who serve an adult population. The regional cancer control officers offer the most recent data for each region and offer cancer-related materials for physicians’ offices.
For contact information for the cancer control officer in your region, please see the following Web site: http://www.lcltfb.org/laccp/. If you would like more information or have any questions about the Council or the detailing project, please do not hesitate to e-mail Colleen Ryan, MPH, cryan1@lsuhsc.edu, or Becky Majdoch, MPH, at becky.majdoch@cancer.org.
