Externship Program
Are you interested in working with a practicing family physicians to conduct clinical or educational research? Apply to receive $2,000.00 to conduct important research in primary care.
The LAFP’s Family Medicine Externship Program is a four-week summer clerkship that exposes rising second-year medical students to the daily activities of family physicians. It gives the student a better understanding of the role that the family doctor plays in his or her community. Students who participate in externships are given the opportunity to visit hospitals, nursing homes, continuing medical seminars, and physician’s practices.
After completion of the four-week externship, the student will receive a stipend of $2000. This program is funded and sponsored by the LAFP Foundation. Housing and travel arrangements are the responsibility of the student. For more information, read the application guidelines below.
Guidelines and Eligibility
Each proposal must be written and submitted by a student currently enrolled in a Louisiana Medical school. Each project must have one preceptor and the preceptor must be a family physician. The preceptoring physician will receive a $500 stipend for their time.
The proposal should be no more than five pages in length, double spaced. In the proposal, you must:
1. State the research question, describe the background of the study, and relate its importance to family medicine.
2. Describe the study design or education evaluation, including the study subjects, setting, and data analysis.
3. Describe the time frame for the project. (Most projects will be four weeks in length.)
4. Indicate ways you plan to disseminate the results.
5. Itemize the budget. Each grant can be up to $2500 of which up to $500 goes to the preceptoring physician and up to $2000 for a student stipend.
6. Include the CV of the student and abbreviated CV of the preceptor. Highlight qualifications and experience. Provide complete addresses and contact information, including e-mail addresses. (CV’s are not included in the five page limit.)
7. Include a letter of support from the preceptor, describing the preceptor’s role. (Letters are not included in the five page limit.)
Also, you must submit the following application with your proposal for consideration. There is a limited amount of scholarships.
