Transnasal Esophagoscopy Workshop at LSUHSC Shreveport on April 25, 2009-CME Pending!
This workshop is intended to teach family physicians to perform Transnasal Esophagoscopy(TNE). The workshop consists of 4 hours of didactics and 4 hours of hands-on training. The didactics include indications, contraindications, anatomy as well as pathology of the nasopharynx and esophagus, local anesthesia of the nose, required materials, coding and reimbursement. The hands-on training includes a live demonstration of the procedure using a video TNE endoscope that utilizes a disposable sheath. Attendees would have the opportunity to perform procedures on a volunteer. The TNE video system used in this workshop is manufactured by Vision Sciences and was released to the market in the summer of 2008. The company has agreed to provide several systems for the workshop as well as volunteers on which to practice the procedure.
This procedure is now routinely performed by otolaryngologists in the office setting with no sedation, no need for IV, and no monitoring. The procedure is technically no more difficult than flexible rhinolaryngoscopy and patients tolerate it well. TNE can replace EGD for patients who have problems limited to their pharynx and esophagus. The reimbursement for office-based esophagoscopy is much higher than for EGD done in an endoscopy suite.
Worshop objectives:
- List the indications for TransNasalEsophagoscopy (TNE)
- Recognize the normal anatomy and common pathologies found of the nose, laryngopharynx, and esophagus
