Committees

Committee chairs are responsible for the activities of their respective committees. All standing committees will be expected to submit reports of the year’s activities for the membership at the Annual General Assembly. The President serves as ex-officio on all committees.

The following standing committees shall be established by the President with the advice and concurrence of the Board of Directors: 

  1. Education 
  2. Operations 
  3. Legislative-Membership
    (Combined to incorporate Committee on Physician Advocacy and Committee on Public Issues)

The composition of these bodies shall be determined by the Board of Directors and their functions shall be as specifically set forth in the Bylaws and as may be determined by the Board of Directors. 

The President, with the advice of the Board of Directors, may appoint such additional committees or similar organizational entities to assist the Board of Directors as he/she deems appropriate. The composition and functions of such additional committees or organizational entities shall be as determined by the Board of Directors. 

Each committee shall meet at least once a year and submit an annual report to the Board of Directors prior to the annual meeting of the General Assembly. 

The Chair, with the approval of the President, shall determine the time and place of each meeting preferably as part of a cluster of committee meetings or in conjunction with a Board of Directors meeting. 

The Chair with the assistance of the staff shall prepare an agenda for each meeting to be sent to all members of the committee far enough in advance of the meeting so that the members can study the topics to be discussed. 

The Chair shall be oriented to the duties of the committee by review of the appropriate section in the policy manual, by review of minutes of previous meetings of the committee and by review of any prior action of the Board of Directors and General Assembly on issues pertinent to his committee. 

Each committee meeting will be attended by staff to assist their deliberations. 

Based on the recorded minutes of the meeting the Chair shall prepare a report to be presented to the Board of Directors. 

All actions of committees will not become policy of the LAFP until approval by the Board of Directors or General Assembly.

Education Committee

Conduct, develop, assist, and evaluate programs, lectures, courses or other means of continuing medical education for the benefit of family physicians in Louisiana. 

Evaluate continuing medical education courses offered to family physicians in Louisiana to determine if they qualify for AAFP credit and AMA/PRA Category 1 credit. 

Operations Committee

Supervise the financial transactions of the Academy by supervising the keeping of the Academy’s accounts, operational costs, and approving all expenditures incurred in maintaining the LAFP headquarters office building including all property. 

Periodically make a study of the Bylaws and make recommendations for changes, deletions, or modifications in order to maintain the integrity and consistency of the Bylaws. 

Evaluate Academy projects and recommend to the Board of Directors any initiative which would aid in the long-range planning of the Academy. 

Legislative and Membership Issues Committee

To promote membership interest in the Academy, and to initiate, coordinate, and subsidize membership services made available through the Academy.  Evaluate and advise the Board of Directors on issues of concern to minority physicians, women in medicine, new physicians, resident and student members. 

Formulate and advise the Board of Directors on plans and programs which expand, maintain and improve health care services and standards. Investigate and recommend such action to the Board to insure that the LAFP shall have an active voice on all issues concerning legislation and governmental affairs. Recommend to the Board such campaigns of public enlightenment or education, as it may deem appropriate. Evaluate such issues of ethics as may come before the Academy and to make recommendations to the Board on such ethics issues, as the Board shall deem appropriate. To evaluate and advise the Board on ethical issues and public health issues of immediate concern to family physicians in Louisiana.
