Chances are, you're looking for materials and experiences that will help you explore a potential career in family medicine. Both LAFP and AAFP can provide the resources you need from general information about a family medicine career and opportunities to work with a family physician mentor, to information about the residency match process. If you are a medical student attending school in Louisiana, becoming a member of the AAFP gives you automatic membership in LAFP, and vice versa. By joining the LAFP/AAFP, your membership allows you to receive materials that will help you with your decision about going into family medicine. The LAFP is here to support you, as a student, through your residency, as a new physician and throughout your family medicine career. Through conferences, scholarships and other opportunities, LAFP provides students the resources they need to as they are in medical school.
As a member of LAFP, students have the opportunity to participate in LAFP activities; network with other students throughout the state and receive LAFP publications.
Leadership Opportunities
Leadership Development in Primary Care - There's no better way put your professional career on the fast track than with active involvement in your specialty's professional association. Involvement introduces valuable networking and learning opportunities, along with the chance to help shape the specialty for future students. LAFP provides opportunities for Louisiana student leaders to coordinate state wide activities for medical students interested in family medicine. By serving as a FMIG officer at your medical school or a student board representative, officers serve as student advocates to the LAFP's General Assembly, AAFP's National Congress of Family Medicine Students, LAFP Board of Directors, and LAFP Medical Student and Resident Affairs Committee. This group also helps organize a Family Medicine Conference for Medical Students and Residents each year. Act today!
Getting Involved in the AAFP -- The American Academy of Family Physicians is one of the few specialty organizations to actively enlist their student members in leadership roles. AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students Family Medicine Conference for Medical Students FMIG Network Family Medicine Interest Groups (FMIG) at each medical school in Louisiana provide a network for students interested in family medicine. LAFP helps to coordinate FMIG activities including informal dinners with practicing family physicians, educational forums, and community service projects at participating schools. Web & Print Publications Louisiana Family Doctor Magazine Great Information on Family Medicine - Our quarterly magazine spotlights hot topics pertinent to family medicine. Not only will you receive LAFP's publications at no charge, you'll have access to the the award-winning American Family Physician Journal online. This scientific periodical is published twice a month and offers reviews of other medical periodicals, articles on topics pertaining to patient care and diagnosis, study resources for exams, and even references to other medical topics. Most student members find the AAFP Journal extremely useful during all four years of medical school. This weekly e-newsletter keeps LAFP members up to date on news that affects Louisiana family physicians.
