Leadership Opportunities

After seven (or more) years of professional education, you may be too accustomed to following others’ leads to think of yourself as much of a leader. But no one gets as far as you have without some leadership skills, and if you haven’t started to develop and express them yet, there’s no time like the present. Family medicine, and health care in general, needs strong leaders, and they will come from your ranks. Residency and the early years of practice are a great time to look beyond day-to-day medical practice, and to consider other ways to make use of your time and gifts.

LAFP offers leadership training through opportunities on a wide range of committees, as well as our Board of Directors. By being an Academy leader, you will have a voice and vote in key issues affecting the family medicine specialty. LAFP provides opportunities for resident leaders to coordinate statewide activities for their fellow family medicine residents.

What do you like?

  • Maybe it’s obvious, but to be an effective leader, you need to have a passion for what you do.
  • Are you interested in policy and governmental issues? Working in legislative advocacy, locally or at the state level, might be a natural way to develop skills in that area.
  • Do you feel called to serve a certain portion of the population (the economically disadvantaged, a certain ethnic group, the disabled)? Working with local agencies, social or medical, could set you on the right path.
  • Is there a public health issue, like environmental protection or smoking cessation, about which you feel strongly?
  • Joining forces with those in your community who share your passion will give you the opportunity to make a difference in the public health arena.
  • If you like to teach, volunteering to teach medical students or residents in your area can give you more experience, and can be a rewarding way to help develop new physicians and give something back to the educational system that brought you this far.

How much can you do?
You’re already working long hours, and recent graduates of your program keep telling you they’re working even harder out in practice. Then there are the personal relationships you’ve been trying to balance with work all these years. Who has time to be a leader?

The good news is that you’re not looking at another full-time endeavor here. Most leadership opportunities can take a surprisingly small amount of your time. Taking part in a LAFP Committee that meets two or three times per year or taking on a medical student one half-day per week can all be made to fit into your already busy life.

Leadership = Involvement

Becoming a leader doesn’t mean being in charge of something. It means getting involved. The more you do so, the more you’ll realize that leadership relies on collaboration, and becoming a leader starts with participation.

Resident leadership
You don’t need to wait until you graduate to work on your leadership skills. Residency provides lots of opportunities to get involved outside of your regular responsibilities.

  • Work on a committee in your program or hospital.
  • Get involved in a community outreach project with other residents (or start one, if you see a need).
  • Get involved in the Student and Resident Leadership Committee (the resident branch of the CAFP).
  • Volunteer to be on a LAFP Committee.
  • Contact the FMIG of your local medical school to see how your program can reach and support students interested in family medicine.
  • Volunteer to write an article for Louisiana Family Doctor magazine.

Once you’re out
There are even more opportunities for leadership once you leave residency.

  • Volunteer to teach a medical student in your office.
  • Assist in directing health care policy by offering to serve as a legislative or media contact.
  • Work with your school district to bring the Tar Wars curriculum to the local schools.
  • Join a LAFP committee.
  • Write editorials for LAFP publications.
