CME Resources

Continuing medical education (CME) is a cornerstone of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and has been a requirement for continuing membership since the founding of this organization in 1947. CME for the family physician is emphasized because the responsibility for providing comprehensive and continuing health care to patients carries with it the responsibility to continue learning. The need to keep abreast of the rapid expansion of medical knowledge necessitates CME.

General Requirements for Members:

Active members and family physicians eligible for supporting membership must complete 150 credits of CME every three years.

Of these:
  • A minimum of 25 credits must be obtained from live learning activities*, AND
  • A minimum of 75 must be Prescribed credit.
The remaining credits may be Prescribed, Elective, or a combination of both.
*An exemption to the 25 live activity credits will be allowed for AAFP Active members or family physicians eligible for supporting membership who submit evidence that they are providing medical care in a missionary/charitable practice setting in an overseas practice for more than a 12-month period.

CME Records and Reporting
Provided by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), members can view their CME record and report their CME on this interactive section of the AAFP Web site. For continued membership, AAFP/LAFP members must participate in and report 150 credits of Continuing Medical Education every three years. At least 75 of these must be prescribed credits approved by the American Academy of Family Physicians. You must also have 25 credits of CME in group activities. The rest of the credits may be elective or prescribed hours. Reporting your credits as you complete them will ensure that you do not forget an activity when it comes time for re-election.

There are several ways you can report credits:

  • You can view a list of the CME you have on file already and report credits online by going to http://www.aafp.org/cme. You will need your AAFP ID#.
  • Use the AAFP CME Reporting Form and fax back to AAFP at (913) 906-6087. This form can be obtained online here or by calling AAFP CME Reporting at 1-800-274-8043.
  • Mail the CME Reporting Form to AAFP – Attn: CME Reporting, 11400 Tomahawk Creek Pkwy, Leawood, KS 66211
  • Call AAFP, CME Reporting at 1-800-274-8043, and they can assist you over the phone.
