YOU are the voice for your PATIENTS! The LAFP is YOUR voice for Family Medicine in Louisiana! When you join the LAFP, we become your advocate on the front lines of the legislative battle.
We keep Family Medicine at the table and protect your interest as well as the interest of your patients. The LAFP allows your voice to be heard.
The Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians actively pursues and supports legislation to:
1. Increase access to affordable, quality and comprehensive health care.
2. Successfully address the severe shortage of primary care physicians in Louisiana.
3. Significantly improve the overall health of Louisiana and its citizens.
The LAFP has implemented programs and events through out the year to give our members opportunities to be a visible force at the capitol.
A few of these include:
White Coat Day at the Capitol: White Coat Day is key to physicians’ success in the Louisiana Legislature in 2012, and beyond, and the need for physicians' voices is growing. Issues concerning health care are becoming increasingly complex and the policy makers need to hear from physicians as more and more challenges are being faced at both the state and federal levels. Physicians make a big impression when they show up and talk with Senators and Representatives from their hometown. You are the voice for your patients and when it comes to healthcare issues, your patients and your colleagues need your help. The LAFP is calling on YOU to make a difference!
Family Physician of the Day: The Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians asks members each session to sign up to be "Family Doctor of the Day" at the capitol during the regular Legislative Session. This program enables the LAFP to build an effective relationship with our senators and representatives; a relationship that should be maintained if our views and suggestions concerning health care are to be heard. We ask volunteers for all day shifts, Monday through Thursday during the regular session. You will be asked to perform non-invasive type procedures.
LaFamPac: LaFamPac is the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians’ state political action committee (PAC). Its purpose is to help elect candidates to the LA Legislature who support LAFP’s legislative goals and objectives with the intention to strengthen the voice of the LAFP and Family Medicine in Louisiana. We support candidates who are sympathetic to the cause of promoting quality health care and the medical profession and provide education to candidates and potential candidates who seek public office. This voluntary family medicine PAC provides Louisiana family physicians a strong voice in the LA state legislature and helps the Academy in its efforts to impact both health policy and the overall practice environment. Contrary to popular opinion, LaFamPac contributions do not buy votes and aren't expected too. The LAFP believes organizations and their members who make contributions are more likely to get an audience be heard during the legislative process. Overall, the goal of LaFamPac is to build awareness of the Academy among members of the legislature and help impact related policy discussions.
