altAs a medical student, we understand that anything that can help guide you and make your experience easier helps out greatly! The LAFP is ready and willing to help with any questions or concerns you may have.

The LAFP has developed many tools for our student members and continue to update these tools as the year, and your career, progresses.

LAFP Mentorship Program
If you are interested in pursuing Family Medicine, this program allows you to speak with local family doctors as well as shadow them in their everyday practice. Have questions about residency? We can also pair you with a resident member who can guide you through the steps that await you.

Strolling Through The Match
Attention Students: Match Day comes once a year and the topic is on the minds of medical students around the country. The 2011-2012 Strolling Through the Match publication is now available for reference and is updated each year. Please use this publication as a resource. Please click here to view the document. Feel free to share this with fellow students OR active members and Residency Directors can hand these out when the visit and talk to medical schools.

Externship Program
Background information: The student Externship Program is an opportunity to work with a practicing or academic family physician to conduct clinical or educational research.  Funded jointly through the LAFP Foundation and AAFP Foundation, the goal of the Externship Program is to offer Louisiana medical students the opportunity to research contemporary issues in family medicine.  The research is typically conducted over the summer and runs approximately one to two months.  One grant is available for a second- or third-year Louisiana medical student.  It gives the student a better understanding of the role that the family doctor plays in his or her community. Students who participate in externships are given the opportunity to visit hospitals, nursing homes, continuing medical seminars, and physician’s practices. After completion of the four-week externship, the student will receive a stipend of $2000. Housing and travel arrangements are the responsibility of the student.

Details: Are you interested in working with a practicing family physician to conduct clinical or educational research?  The LAFP’s Family Medicine Student Externship Program is a four-week summer clerkship that exposes medical students to the daily activities of family physicians. It gives the student a better understanding of the role that the family doctor plays in his or her community.  *NOTE* This opportunity is ONLY available to second- and third-year Louisiana medical students.

Information for the 2012 program will be posted by February 1, 2012!
