      • Medical Student Scholarship Awards
      • AAFP National Students Conference
      • Family Medicine Interest Groups

      • Resident Repayment Program
    • Support of LAFP Educational Activities
    • Our Focus
  • As efforts continue to reform our system of medical care delivery, we face a severe shortage of family physicians. In fact, less than 13 percent of American physicians are family physicians.
Several areas of Louisiana are without adequate physician coverage. Thus, access to care and cost of care are of great concern for a large number of our citizens. As we see it, the solution is the increased training and equitable distribution of family physicians in all areas of Louisiana so as to provide for adequate medical care statewide.

Our Goals

  • To encourage premedical and medical students to pursue the specialty of family medicine. This will address the critical shortage of family physicians in Louisiana.
  • To provide Louisiana family practice residents with educational opportunities that might not otherwise be available.
  • To maintain the educational excellence of family physicians throughout their careers.
  • To support research in family medicine. This will result in improved patient care.
  • To enhance communication between family physicians in the community.
  • To support innovation and improvement in family medicine.
Our Governance

Our History

  • The Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians Foundation was established in 1987 to serve the public through fostering education and research programs for family physicians, physicians in training and medical students.
  • The Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians Foundation is largely dependent on the generosity of Louisiana family physicians who financially support the promotion of their specialty.

Foundation Funds/Activities - DONATE TODAY!

F. P. Bordelon, M.D., Lectureship Fund
In honor of Dr. Bordelon's many years of dedicated service to his community, the state and to Family Medicine, friends of "Dr. F.P." as he was known, along with the LAFP-Foundation, have established this fund to honor his memory and his contributions. Through the F.P. Bordelon, M.D. Lectureship we are bringing respected Family Physicians and medical leaders to address our organization each year, in conjunction with the LAFP’s Annual Scientific Assembly. We invite you to make a contribution to this endowment and to honor Dr. F.P.’s extensive and distinctive achievements over his life time.

Founders Fund
The Founders Fund was established by the Board of Directors to provide members with an opportunity to play a significant role in generating a sound financial base for the Foundation. Founders pledge a contribution of $500 each year for five years ($2,500 total). Four hundred dollars of each annual gift will be designated to the Founders Fund. The remaining $100 will be shared with the AAFP Foundation.

Gerald R. Gehringer Award
The Smith, Kline & French President's Grant was established in November of 1980 as an unrestricted yearly grant to the AAFP President to be designated by the Academy President to further the aims and goals of family medicine. Dr. Gerald R. Gehringer, member and past president of the LAFP, Professor Emeritus, and Past Head of the Department of Family Medicine at LSUMC New Orleans, was President of the AAFP in 1982-1983. He designated that this $10,000 grant shall be used for a family practice award. It thus became known as the Gerald R. Gehringer Family Practice Award for outstanding leadership and scholarly accomplishments in the field of family medicine. The award consists of an appropriately inscribved plaque accompanied by a cash award. The recipient must be a senior graduating from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. The amount of the cash award is determined on an annual basis.

Jean Aitken Memorial Fund
The Jean Aitken Memorial Fund was established by the Board of Directors in memory of Mrs. Jean Aitken. Jean served the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians for 35 years as its Executive Vice President. She held a special place in her heart for medical students. To honor her memory, this fund supports student awards and activities.

Michael O. Fleming Family Practice Award
In honor of Michael O. Fleming, MD, member of the LAFP, being inaugurated to the office of President of the AAFP, the LAFP donated $8,000 to the LSU-Shreveport Family Practice Fund. The fund was then re-named as the Michael O. Fleming Family Practice Award. The award consists of a cash award and a commerative plaque for oustanding leadership and scholarly accomplishments in the field of family medicine. The recipient must be a senior graduating from LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport. The amount of the cash award is determined on an annual basis.

Fundraisers - Silent Auction, Golf Tournament, Tennis Tournament
Each year the Foundation hosts a Silent Auction, Golf Tournament and Tennis Tournament, which are held during the LAFP Annual Assembly. Monies are utilized to support resident and student awards, and activities.

Tar Wars
The LAFP Foundation is serving as the State Coordinator of the Tar Wars Health Education Program. This fund supports the activities associated with the annual Tar Wars Program and Poster Contest.
