Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize the clinical manifestations of Parvovirus B19, including its role in aplastic crises in immunocompromised patients.
  2. Identify populations at increased risk for complications of Parvovirus B19 infection, including those with HIV and chronic hemolytic disorders.
  3. Describe appropriate diagnostic testing for Parvovirus B19 in hospitalized patients with unexplained anemia.
  4. Outline infection control precautions and counseling considerations related to Parvovirus B 19 exposure, particularly in pregnancy and healthcare settings.

Dr. Madelyn Lavergne is a third-year Family Medicine resident at the LSU Lafayette Family Medicine Residency Program, with a passion for providing compassionate healthcare to rural Louisiana communities. Originally from the small town of Plaucheville, she completed her undergraduate education at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and earned her medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. Now in her final year of residency, Dr. Lavergne is committed to returning to her roots to serve the people of rural Louisiana as a primary care physician. Outside of medicine, she enjoys spending time with her husband of four years and their energetic 21-month-old daughter, with another baby girl on the way. She is honored to present at this Grand Rounds.
