Dr. Abbasi was born in Pakistan and migrated to Lake Charles when he was 7 years old. He is the second youngest of seven siblings. He graduated from McNeese State University obtaining his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences in 2013. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine from Saba University School of Medicine in 2018. He completed his family medicine residency at the Baton Rouge General where he served as Chief Resident.
Dr. Abbasi was described as “a problem solver, a team player and not afraid to offer his opinion whether it may be unpopular or not” by faculty during his time as chief. The faculty also noted, “He unselfishly offers his spare time serving the underserved and sick of our community.” We asked Dr. Abbasi what led him to stay in Baton Rouge to practice, he stated, “The reason I stayed in Baton Rouge, truly was the people. Currently, my family practice clinic is located in mid-city Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I wanted to be near my mentors as I develop my skills as an independent physician and serve my community.”
We asked Dr. Abbasi why he chose family medicine, he answered, “The reason I choose family medicine is the fact that it allows me to practice all scopes of medicine. Currently, I work in the following settings: inpatient, outpatient, nursing home, and urgent care. With family medicine, you can truly tailor your practice how you see fit!” He continued, “I also serve as a core faculty for Baton Rouge General Family Medicine Residency program and as medical director of St. James Place, a retirement community in Baton Rouge.”
Dr. Abbasi has been an active member of LAFP during residency, serving as resident delegate to the LAFP Board of Directors, General Assembly and National Conference. It is only fitting that we welcome him as a newly installed LAFP Board member. We asked him to tell us about his experience about being an LAFP member and why it is important? Dr. Abbasi answers, “Louisiana is home for me. After residency, I wanted to stay within the state and serve my community. As part of my involvement with the community, I also want to be involved with LAFP and be in the forefront with colleagues that are actively making decisions for family medicine in Louisiana! I hope to achieve a long-lasting mark in Louisiana and LAFP allows me to do this.”
Dr. Abbasi is married to his beautiful wife, Eimann Tareen. He enjoys Netflix and napping. He says, “Anyone that knows me will tell you about my evening naps. I enjoy outdoor activities and visiting new place. I try to go skiing every winter and visit a new beach in the summer. I also enjoy hiking, biking, boating, and jet skiing.” He is fluent in 4 languages. If he was not a family physician, he states, “I would either own a cattle ranch in Montana or be a professional heli-skiier?! This is a hard one, I honestly don’t know.”
