CMS has issued its 2024 Medicare physician fee schedule proposed rule, and the AAFP sees elements of it that could strengthen primary care. However, the proposed 2024 MPFS also perpetuates inadequate Medicare physician payment.

In a statement, AAFP President Tochi Iroku-Malize, M.D., M.P.H., FAAFP said that the proposed rule’s conversion factor “will still result in untenable cuts for all physicians” that could threaten practice stability.

The AAFP has continually called on Congress to invest in a more sustainable Medicare physician payment system — the only Medicare payment system lacking an annual inflationary update.

Consistent with AAFP advocacy to strengthen and invest in primary care, the proposed rule would implement the G2211 add-on code, designed to more appropriately value the complexity of primary care and other office and outpatient evaluation and management visits.

The Academy will share a detailed overview of the MPFS in the coming weeks.
