The AAFP and national family medicine organizations are recruiting family medicine residents and medical students to serve in national leadership roles during the coming year. AAFP chapters play a key role identifying residents and students to apply for these leadership positions and providing feedback on candidates based on their experiences with them. The process for providing this feedback is new and simplified for this recruitment cycle.

There are leadership opportunities for residents and students in each of these categories:

  • Elected national positions like the AAFP board of directors and delegates to the AAFP Congress of Delegates
  • AAFP Commissions
  • Family Medicine Interest Group Network leadership
  • Representatives and liaisons to other organizations
  • AAFP program and advisory boards

The 2023 application timeline is:

  • July 20: Preferred deadline for applications for positions elected at the AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students
  • July 27-29: Elections at AAFP National Conference
  • August 10: Deadline for applications for the Annals of Family Medicine Editorial Advisory Board and American Medical Association leadership positions
  • September 7: Deadline for applications for AAFP commissions, FMIG Network leadership, and all other positions
  • October 1: Annals of Family Medicine and AMA appointments announced
  • November 1: AAFP commission, FMIG Network leadership, and all other appointments announced

New this year, AAFP chapters will not be asked to submit a letter of support for resident and student candidates for national leadership positions. AAFP chapters will be asked to complete a simple online form for any applicant who is a resident or student member of their chapter. The form will include:

  • Chapter name
  • Name and email of individual completing the form
  • Whether the chapter recommends the applicant
  • Previous engagement the chapter has had with the applicant (multiple choice options)
  • Additional information the chapter would like to share (open text box)
