The AAFP recently revamped its Medicaid Work Requirements backgrounder, which is now available on its State Legislative Issue Backgrounders web page. Earlier this month, Georgia became the only state to impose work requirements on Medicaid recipients. Around the same time, Arkansas state officials submitted a new waiver to the Biden administration seeking working requirements for people on its expanded Medicaid program. Additionally, other states are considering similar waiver requests.

The AAFP opposes changes to Medicaid that would limit eligibility and coverage for beneficiaries. Recent efforts to impose work requirements on Medicaid beneficiaries’ conflict with the Joint Principles on Section 1115 Demonstration Waivers. Should chapters choose to engage on this issue, if it arises in their states, the AAFP encourages them to coordinate with the Center for State Policy who is happy to support those efforts.
