Today’s family medicine residents are the future of the specialty. The Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians highly values the contributions made by family medicine residents and students and recognizes the importance of training future leaders of medicine.
 
There are many ways to begin or continue your leadership journey in family medicine, specifically with the LAFP. If you’re interested in starting with committee work, there’s a spot for you. If you want to take your leadership skills to the next level and apply for a director position on the LAFP Board of Directors, there’s an opportunity for that too. The LAFP is here to help build you into the best leader you can be.

As a resident and student member, you have many opportunities to get involved with LAFP.  Nominations are now open for resident and student delegate positions to the LAFP Board of Directors, the LAFP General Assembly and the AAFP National Conference.  Any member may nominate themselves or a colleague.

Board of Directors
(2 Resident and 2 Student Positions Elected)

Role:
Two resident positions and two student positions are elected where one will serve as the delegate and the other as the alternate representing the resident and student membership constituency to the Board of Directors. LAFP Board of Director meetings are held via conference all during the year with one face to face meeting at Annual Assembly. General Assembly is also held during LAFP's Annual Assembly. The 73rd Annual Assembly and Exhibition is scheduled for July 30 - August 2, 2020 at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, in Destin, FL.

Responsibilities:

  1. Be a member of the Resident Student Leadership Committee
  2. Attend and participate in Resident/Student Leadership meetings and conference calls throughout the year
  3. Evaluate and advise the Board of Directors on issues unique to medical students and family medicine residents
  4. Support, encourage and validate the choice of Family Medicine as a specialty
  5. Attend and participate in LAFP Board meetings as called throughout the year
  6. Serve as the liaison between the LAFP Board and the Louisiana residency programs and medical schools
  7. Help plan and attend events for resident and student members
  8. Provide information and advertisement information about upcoming LAFP events to interested residents and students. Events include: White Coat Day at the State Capitol, the National Resident and Student Conference, and the Resident/ Student Track at Annual Assembly
  9. Provide information and advertisement to residents about the role and duties of the resident representatives and help to find upcoming residents to fill positions.
  10. Identify new committee members on an annual basis

LAFP General Assembly
(2 Resident and 2 Student Positions Elected)

Role:
Two resident positions and two student positions are elected where one will serve as the delegate and the other as the alternate representing the resident and student membership constituency at the LAFP General Assembly held each year. The General Assembly will meet during the 73rd Annual Assembly and Exibition on July 31, 2020 at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, FL. The delegate will have full-floor privileges, including voting at the LAFP General Assembly.

Responsibilities:

  1. Be a member of the Resident Student Leadership Committee
  2. Attend and participate in Resident/Student Leadership meetings and conference calls throughout the year
  3. Attend the General Assembly to hear discussion on a variety of issues
  4. Draft and submit resolutions pertinent to the resident and student constituency
  5. Vote on each issue with input from other attendees from the resident constituency
  6. Prepare and present a summary report to the Resident Student Leadership Committee

AAFP National Conference Delegates
(2 Resident and 2 Student Positions Elected)

Role:
Two resident positions and two student positions are elected where one will serve as the delegate and the other as the alternate representing the resident and student membership constituency during the AFFP National Conference by writing and coordinating the submission of resolutions and voting on the proposed student and resident resolutions and voting in the election of national student and resident officers. The dates for the AAFP National Conference for Student and Residents is July 30 - August 1, 2020 in Kansas City.

Responsibilities:

  1. Be a member of the Resident Student Leadership Committee
  2. Attend and participate in Resident/Student Leadership meetings and conference calls throughout the year
  3. Attend the AAFP National Conference for Students and Residents. Expense reimbursement may be available from LAFP for 1 resident and 1 student delegate
  4. Represent Louisiana in the Congress of Delegates and vote on resolutions for the state of Louisiana
  5. Draft and submit resolutions pertinent to the Louisiana student and resident constituency
  6. Report to the Resident and Student Leadership Committee and Board of Directors re: the activities of the National Conference
