Small and mid-size medical practices are bracing for significant changes to the HIPAA Security Rule, which Health and Human Services is expected to finalize by May.

The updates will require all entities to implement multifactor authentication, encrypt electronic protected health information, conduct annual security risk assessments, and maintain detailed compliance documentation. While large hospital systems may find these requirements an extension of existing protocols, smaller practices may struggle with the financial and operational burden.
